If we understand the logic behind the process, we can also better understand why we need to follow certain rules after an extraction.

When a tooth is extracted, we want the socket—the space where the tooth was—to fill with blood and for a blood clot to form and remain intact. This clot plays a crucial role in the healing of the extraction site.

Therefore, during the initial period, we take certain precautions to ensure that the clot forms properly and remains undisturbed.

So, what are these precautions?

First of all, the gauze placed over the extraction site should be kept firmly in place without moving it for at least 1 hour. Usually, 30 minutes is recommended, but I prefer 1 hour.

During this time, instead of spitting out our saliva, we should continue swallowing normally.

For the first 24 hours, certain things are strictly prohibited:

*Rinsing or vigorously washing the mouth

* Spitting

* Sucking on the extraction site to check whether it is bleeding

* Consuming hot foods or drinks

* Applying mechanical pressure to the extraction site with food while eating or disturbing the area

There is one particular misconception I would like to clarify:

It is not entirely accurate to say, “Hot and cold foods are prohibited.”

During the first 24 hours, we should especially avoid hot foods and drinks. Cold, on the other hand, can actually help control swelling and bleeding, particularly during the first few hours.

And now, let’s come to one of the most important points:

Smoking. 🚬

We should absolutely avoid smoking for the first 24 hours, and preferably for even longer.

This is because it is not only the smoke and heat from cigarettes that can be harmful. The suction or vacuum effect created while smoking can also disrupt the blood clot.

In addition, because of the effects of smoking on blood vessels, it can negatively affect blood flow to the extraction site and impair healing. For this reason, even smoking before the extraction can be clinically significant.

So, the rules we follow after a tooth extraction are not random restrictions.

Our goal is simple:

To allow the blood clot to form, protect it, and give the extraction site the best possible conditions to heal properly.
