There is a common belief that tooth loss occurs during pregnancy. Phrases like “Every pregnancy costs a tooth” or “I got pregnant and all my teeth decayed” are often heard. However, this belief is not scientifically accurate.

In reality, the situation is quite simple: during pregnancy, expectant mothers’ eating habits may change. In particular, the consumption of sugary foods may increase. In addition, oral and dental care routines may be disrupted due to nausea, vomiting, or fatigue. When these two factors come together, dental cavities can develop. However, similar conditions would lead to the same result in non-pregnant individuals as well; in other words, the issue is not pregnancy itself, but rather insufficient oral care and dietary habits.

That said, in expectant mothers who experience frequent vomiting, stomach acid entering the mouth can damage the tooth enamel and make the teeth more sensitive. Even this condition, however, can be largely controlled with proper and regular oral care.

In conclusion, as long as a balanced diet and consistent oral hygiene are maintained, pregnancy does not cause tooth loss. Protecting oral health during this period, as at any other time, depends entirely on individual habits.
