In cases commonly referred to as a “gummy smile,” where excessive gum tissue is visible when smiling, or in situations where the teeth appear shorter due to excess gum tissue or the gum levels are asymmetrical, gum contouring may sometimes be needed before laminate veneers or zirconia restorations.

In some patients, simply reshaping the gums alone can significantly improve the esthetic appearance, making additional restorative treatment unnecessary.

These procedures can range from very minor adjustments to more advanced surgical interventions.

Most of the time, removing or reshaping only 1–3 mm of gum tissue is sufficient. The procedure is performed under local anesthesia using laser, electrocautery, or conventional techniques. It is generally a very comfortable treatment. Pain, bleeding, and the healing process are usually much milder than most patients expect. The procedure is completed quickly, and the teeth begin to appear longer, more symmetrical, and more elegant.

The healing process is typically fast as well. In many cases, the gums heal properly without any additional intervention. However, following a few simple recommendations can help speed up recovery:

* Avoid very hot food and drinks for a short period

* Pay close attention to oral hygiene

* Use antiseptic mouthwash or rinse regularly with salt water

* Avoid traumatizing the treated area

If more than 3 mm of correction is required, treating only the gum tissue may not be enough. In such cases, bone reshaping procedures may also be necessary. Similar healing recommendations apply, although the complete healing period may take slightly longer, around 3–4 weeks.

A properly planned gum contouring procedure can sometimes create a much greater improvement in a smile than patients initially expect, even on its own.
