Sensitivity in our teeth may be a sign of something wrong in the mouth or surrounding tissues. We may have a simple or advanced tooth decay. Sometimes dental caries are on the surfaces of the teeth that we can see, and sometimes we cannot see them when we open our mouths because they are at the side interfaces of the teeth. A doctor’s control is sometimes required in addition to this, an x-ray is required. Gum recession may occur due to calculus or gum disease. Since the root tissue of the tooth, which occurs when the gums are pulled, is weaker against abrasions, especially when we brush with excessive pressure with wrong techniques, this can cause abrasions on the teeth and this can cause sensitivity. Yet another reason is the habit of clenching or grinding teeth. Clenching or grinding causes abrasions both on the tips of the teeth or on the chewing surfaces, and on the tooth and gingival junction line, called the collar, due to the tension created by squeezing, which can cause sensitivity. In fact, as a result of clenching or grinding, abrasion on the teeth will become visible only after long periods of time, which can be expressed in years. However, before we see the abrasions, our sensitivity can begin. Therefore, it is possible that sensitivities started before the abrasion began. This is an opportunity for us to recognize the situation early and start the treatment process before the problem grows. Deterioration of such treatments like fillers, crowns over time can cause leakage and sensitivity in the teeth. Neglecting our dental care habits for a while or, on the contrary, acting too harshly while brushing our teeth are also among the reasons for sensitivity. In this way, sensitivity can be the early stage indicator of many problems, and sometimes we may not have any sensitivity even though we have serious problems in our teeth. For this reason, we recommend regular physician control every 6-12 months.
